TURKEYFOOT LAKE GOLF LINKS
The idea of a public golf course in Akron was conceived by Parke H. Thornton after plaing the old Silver Lake Country Club with en from Pittsburgg where public golf aiready had foothold. The original nine was started in March 1924 and opened for play August l, 1925. The immediate success was apparent by Labor Day and led to the construction of a second nine which opened for play on Memorial Day 1927. Plans were then made for a third and possibie fourth nine. The third nine was started in 1927 and completed in early 1931. The Great Deprerssion postponed plans for a fourth nine and World War II ended the idea of building one. The present layout was established in 1950 becoming the long, middle and waters nines. Thornton descendants still operate the golf course 83 years later.
Turkeyfoot is know all over Northeastern Ohio for its great drainage that allows it to remain open when other courses are unplayabie. The course is also knows for having some of the best conditioned greens in the area. We take great pride in maintaining excellentc conditions all season. To add to the natural beauty of the course, every year we plant hundreds of annual flowers to compleinent other landscape plantings.
Charlie Mozingo, age 58, has been the Superintenden at Turkeyfoot for 31 years. The Assistant Superintendenit is Matt Byer. The General Manager is John Thornton. Charlie's wife Mary is a retired teacher who keeps busy working a few days a week at the course and coaching girls' golf at Cuyahoga Falls High School. They have two grown children. News from Our Chapter Delegate 2008: Sean McHugh
Times are changing
Now that the National Conference (GIS Show) is over and we are all back from sunny Florida, it's time to get back to the business of managing golf courses and growing turf. So just before we all become to busy to read articles of one's experience as a Chapter Delegate, I thought I get this one into the Northern Ohio's Turf magazine.
So what does the Chapter Delegate do, I am yours and the Northern Ohio Superintendent Association liaison to the Superintendent Association of America. This means I carry your vote to the National Conference for all matters that may be voted on. In the past Michelle Feher was our delegate, so you can understand my determination to do everything right because Michelle has done such a great job in this capacity, she really understood her role and the inner workings of the Association. Michelle was a great help in preparing me for this opportunity.
